Hello fashion lovers,
So, I often get the questions how did I get into fashion, what made me love fashion, or why do I love fashion so much? As a young girl, my grandma and mother sewed. My mother would hem our pants because we were so short but, my grandmother was a true designer. I would go with her to Walmart on Thursday and she would buy patterns and material to make them. I would be in awe of the whole process. She would show me pictures of how she made my mother’s and her siblings’ wedding attire. It was then that I knew she was superwoman!
As I grew older I always took notice of how my mother and grandmother would never take a day off from looking stylish. This became important to me during my high school years. Appearance became something I instantly wanted to improve. In high school, I had self-esteem issues and I would use my outfit to distract people from my face. Crazy right? After I started getting a better understanding of style and fashion I realized the importance of signature style.
Janelle Monae became the epitome of who I wanted to be when it came to style. Effortless but, with a classy and chic approach. Monae kept a black and white color palette with a bowtie. The way she wore those bowties inspired me so much. I went to my grandparent’s house the next day and expressed to them how I would be getting one for my birthday. With no hesitation, my grandfather runs down the hall and pulls out the cutest little bowtie.
The bowtie became my signature piece. People didn’t even know my name. They just knew me as the girl who wore the bowties. This bowtie was my breath of fresh air when it came to my love of fashion. I feel the whole point of fashion is to set you apart with style. I became more than just an ordinary girl. I began to gain confidence, I began to feel empowered!
I am so thankful that my grandfather gave me the bowtie. It became the beginning of something beautiful!
